Free e-mail service that bridges the gap between mobiles and computers - Times Online

Free e-mail service that bridges the gap between mobiles and computers - Times Online

Last time I looked, I have at least four personal email accounts (iiNet, GMAIL Hotmail, Three.com) PLUS this Blog, SMS text messages, phone, mobile phone, voicemails, Google Groups email, Flickr messaging, Webshots comments, Picasa comments, postal mail, Windows Messenger, SKYPE and did I forget Snail Mail, well I never use it anyway.

So I started searching for old friends on Facebook. This is not just another search engine! It is another email! A fairly limited email (within Facebook) but an email that involves the same process of checking the Inbox and other compulsive activities that are needed to keep organised. And my level of privacy on the Internet is approaching zero as my GMAIL mailbox is filled with notifications about stuff going on in Facebook. Emails about email. Enough.

Now "they" want us try Yahoo Mail (see article above) so we can send free emails to SMS mobile phones. I can already receive emails and SMS etc on my phone, why do I need this? It is, or will be, free but there is always a cost in loss of privacy and the loss of time to do other, non-virtual things... real stuff such as talking.

I really miss Telegrams at Weddings.

Cleone completes Half Marathon

Perth's City to Surf 2007 included a Half Marathon and Cleone was a competitor and a brilliant finisher with a *net time of 1:51:31 .

Apart from the 21.1 km distance, obstacles included the crowd of 29,738 participants in the City to Surf competitions this year. Almost 1000 people attempted the longer Half Marathon.

(* net - measured via individual transponder, as distinct from "gun time" where I believe a gun is pointed at you to make you run faster).

Tech Tips of the day

  • From an ABC radio program, advice about a free program that will help recover deleted files. Go to http://www.recuva.com/
  • My current favorite on the How To channel is "Lab With Leo". Leo's website is at http://www.labwithleo.com/
    • Scroll down to episode #12 and you will find a great browser add-on called the McAfee SiteAdvisor. This can be found directly at http://www.siteadvisor.com/ . The free download is a great way to check out the safety of websites listed by Google, Yahoo, etc.
  • Finally, http://www.lexblog.com/, not to be confused with my LesBlogG. Lexblog is a site dedicated to Building Blogs for Lawyers. Why? Because "They (blogs) are more tasteful and less expensive than other lawyer advertising." The author of this site was interviewed on Leo's show #12. He suggested everyone including plumbers should have blog sites to promote their expertise. (My expertise, if you follow this blog, amounts to cutting and pasting).

The Cat in the Hat on Aging

My Birthday (last week)

Just in case you weren't feeling "too" old today, this will certainly change things.

The people who started
university this year across the nation were born in 1989.

Star Wars is older than them.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

They have always had an answering machine

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

They have always had CD's, never records.

Ray Martin has been on Channel 9 their entire life.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even was.

McDonald 's never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Do you feel old yet? (Sorry) refer this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type, that's for those of you who have trouble reading.

3 May 2007: Well, it was great while it lasted:

Dear Pandora listener,
Today we have some extremely disappointing news to share with you. Due to international licensing constraints, we are deeply, deeply sorry to say that we must begin proactively preventing access to Pandora's streaming service for most countries outside of the U.S.

The White Diamond

The White Diamond (click on image to see a collection of photos)
Recently saw The White Diamond on SBS and I liked it very much. This film is absolutely amazing, specifically because it truly honors its subjects. One in particular, a local Rastafarian workman named Mark Anthony Yhap, was one of the most eloquent, humane and beautiful people I have seen in a documentary. The simplicity of his lifestyle, his desire to include his precious pet rooster on his journey, and his longing to reconnect with his family; I was truly moved by him. The White Diamond's flight brings hope and whimsy into the lives of the people who came into contact with it.

George Steinmetz Sand Camels Picture

Taken by George Steinmetz for the Turkish Edition of the National Geographic Magazine. He took this from the air in his motorized paraglider. The shadows of the camels (yes, the little white lines are the camels) look just like the actual camels from above. As reported in this Snopes.com article, the photograph was voted one of the best of 2005.

You must move the mouse slowly, it takes a few seconds to adjust, but this is absolutely amazing...it's no joke, just enjoy..

the secret to this is to move your mouse around with the left button suppressed.
